The thing is that modern humans are around for only 200.000 years. The industrial revolution happend some 200 years ago. Humans are only just beginning to reach out. On a cosmic scale that's less than a drop in a million oceans of time. What are the odds that two civilizations (one being us, and one being the aliens) blink at EXACTLY the same timeframe and encounter one another? Maybe you're old enough to ponder this question for 50 years, and that seems like a long time to you, but in the bigger scheme of things the whole human race only exists for a negligible short fraction of an instant. So unless the alien race found a way of living sustainably for a LONG time (and even then) chances of meeting an alien race are extremely slim.
